Students who have some difficulty performing in certain areas of their education should be able to participate in many different classes and assignments without the fear of making others uncomfortable or having to choose which assignments to do in order to achieve the desired goals. UCF online tutoring volunteers are interested in meeting with students and talking about how to make the different accommodations needed for each individual student so that each student can learn and participate in a UCF classroom.The college provides tutoring in multiple locations. Although, most students do not move, UCF tutoring volunteers must take up residence in one location for at least a year before moving on to anothe r. Here are several suggestions that can help students who live in a remote area to make the transition easier:Change the environment. Students who live in a rural area and need tutoring from UCF tutors need to make some changes to their own living environments to facilitate communication. Create quiet zones that can be used for private tutoring. Special lighting should be used for easy reading, as well as safe eating utensils and hands-free devices such as cell phones and pagers.Switch to a home classroom. This can be especially helpful when the students need a longer period of time to catch up or review material or get a feel for the atmosphere of a UCF class. The extra time allows the students to get comfortable in their own environment and learn more about classroom etiquette and proper behavior.Use the floor plan of the classroom. Each student needs the space to interact with other students as well as interact with the UCF tutors. This can be accomplished by having a projector screen and high-resolution monitors, placing a large whiteboard in front of the class so students can write down notes and providing smaller whiteboards so students can write and see what the word is they want to spell out.Get as much input from the students as possible when deciding what materials are needed to help them learn and what materials are not needed. Students need to know about any props or aids they can bring to the class, such as Braille calculators, which require less interruption to other parts of the classroom. Find out whether or not the students need assistive listening devices, the newest technology in audio books.Provide students with supplemental materials throughout the week, but keep a schedule of deadlines. If the students do not complete assignments on time, work with them to develop strategies for more timely completion.
